Helping to Heal Old Wounds

I believe that there is no braver thing to do than to sign up to keep the country you love safe. This is what I consider to be one of the most ultimate acts of bravery and sacrifice. Although we may say “thank you” to these men and women, do we really understand how war and their service affects them? Well, acupuncturists are taking advantage of this opportunity to give back to these selfless people, and are using acupuncture to help people suffering with PTSD.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD, is a mental disorder that is triggered by a traumatic situation that makes a person fear for their safety with feelings such as helplessness and horror. The traumatic experiences of war, as an example, makes it difficult for some soldiers returning home to adjust to life after war. PTSD was termed during the Vietnam war identifying the difficulties soldiers struggled with during post-war life. Other terms, such as “shell shock”, were used throughout history to describe similar conditions resulting from the war trauma. Veterans are challenged with a variety of post-deployment health concerns and are in need of recovery support and aid for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phantom limb pain / residual limb pain, post operative pain, chronic musculoskeletal pain, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and adjustment disorder.

Typically acupuncture for PTSD is administered by stimulating specific points in the ear. These points of the body are responsible for controlling particular brain areas that help control nervous functioning as well as mitigate stress levels. Many soldiers who have been victims of PTSD after violent wars are being treated with acupuncture to provide successful results. Recently, the Pentagon has been investigating the beneficial effects of acupuncture for PTSD on soldiers affected with this condition. As per findings from recent trials, it has been found that combat veterans were relieved of their symptoms and experienced reduced depression, as well as pain. The improvements due to acupuncture were also found to be very rapid and significant.

Now that there is proof that Auricular (ear) Acupuncture benefits soldiers affected with PTSD the government is even beginning to employ acupuncturists. They bring them to the hospitals to give these men and women treatments before their trauma even has time to set in and begin to have negative impacts on their life. What an exciting way to be able to give back to these people.
