One of the things I have been lucky enough to become a specialist in, is increasing fertility with Acupuncture. In fact, as of yesterday I have helped 40 couples in the Denver/Metro Area conceive happy, healthy babies using acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine! It’s such an exciting time to be a part of somebody’s life and I usually end up crying every time I get the phone call saying “guess what! We’re pregnant!” Not totally sobbing (that would be weird), but definitely a few tears…enough to ruin my make-up when you get two of those calls in one day, like yesterday!
People often wonder how Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help fertility in both men and women? The basics come down to this: in women we can correct many of the reproductive issues that are contributing to the infertility, bring blood flow to the uterus and help balance stress and hormones. In men we can easily boost the quality of their “swimmers” so that they are as effective as they can be.
Other common questions are how long will it take, when do I have to come in and what’s your success rates. These questions are a little tougher to answer. I usually encourage women to commit to 3 full months of acupuncture and then we can reassess. Some women can conceive right away and others take a while. When to come in, in my office I like to see women at particular parts of their cycle depending on what we decide their fertility issue is (usually 2-3 times during the month). We also have to take in to consideration if a couple is using ART and how to support that process too. Finally, success rates… this is the trickiest question to answer as there are so many different types of issues we might have to correct before a couple finally conceives. I will say that over 70% of women conceives while under my care but how long it takes can vary.
So there you go… the answers you need to decide whether you want to think seriously about incorporating acupuncture and Chinese medicine into you fertility process. My biggest advice to women who decide they want to try it is you MUST fully research your practitioner and make sure they have some kind of specialized training in treating women’s disorders and/or fertility. Good luck and go make some babies!
